My Work Experience

Posted 3 July 2014

My name is Eleanor McCarthy and I am a student at Weatherhead High School, in year 10. On Monday 30th of June I began my week of work experience at the Light Cinema in New Brighton.

I chose to complete my work experience at the Light Cinema as I had been there many times and I knew the cinema was unique and that it hosted different events such as streaming plays and other live events that I had experienced before and thoroughly enjoyed, as well as hosting school screenings, this made the Light Cinema stand out to me over other cinemas. This encouraged me to try to get a placement at the Light Cinema as there were different things I could get involved with and I knew I would learn and improve upon a variety of skills while on my placement. I opted for the Light Cinema over the other businesses in my area that I could have completed my work experience with, as I felt that a placement at the Light Cinema would be a beneficial week with a variety of tasks to complete that would help me prepare for the future when I begin to look for jobs.

When I first arrived I was shown around the cinema and introduced to the supervisors and others that I would be working with. During this week I have helped in different departments in the cinema, for example, with the help of an usher, I cleaned cinema screens and checked the screens showing films to make sure everything was alright. Also, I restocked the food and drink containers, answered phone calls and was able to create this blog post. Moreover, I was shown how to use a till and how to enter vouchers or codes such as Orange Wednesday codes, therefore I was then able to serve customers which I enjoyed.

I have enjoyed serving customers and learning new skills as I now feel I know more about how a cinema operates and the type of jobs that have to be completed there. I feel I have learnt a lot about work, specifically work in the entertainment industry, this week and I think the experience has helped me improve upon my communication, speaking and listening skills which will be vital for me in the future with any job. When I leave school, I would like to work within the film or entertainment industry and I feel my week of work experience has given me more knowledge surrounding this area of work that I hope to go into.

Overall, I have enjoyed my placement at the Light Cinema New Brighton and feel I have learnt a lot from my week of work experience.
