The 2017 Oscar Winners

Posted 25 January 2017

La La Land failed to sweep the board as expected at this year’s Oscars and the biggest shock of the evening came as the Hollywood musical was mistakenly announced as the Best Film.

That honour in fact went to Moonlight, a coming-of-age story chronicling the life of a young black man growing up in a rough neighbourhood in Miami.

Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty had the wrong envelope and the La La Land team were partway through their acceptance speech when the correct winner was announced. Cue lots of awkward faces as the cast and crew of La La Land handed over their golden statues to the stunned team from Moonlight.

Ecstatic Moonlight director Barry Jenkins said: “Even in my dreams this could not be true. But to hell with it, I’m done with dreams – because this is true.”

Moonlight also secured the Best Supporting Actor gong for Mahershala Ali’s stellar performance. Ali goes down in history as the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.

Nominated for 13 Academy Awards, La La Land did win Oscars for Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Score and Best Song, Damien Chazelle won Best Director and leading lady Emma Stone won Best Actress.

Best Actor went to Casey Affleck for his performance in Manchester by the Sea and Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences.
